There is nothing quite like a live performance, especially if it is a musical. Hidden inside a tiny black box theater in Winter Park... pure magic comes to life. I have seen two Broadway style plays at Breakthrough Theatre and to say they solidified my love of theater is an understatement. Never would I have guessed that such astonishing talent resided in our town nor that a room painted black could make me feel so many things.
A few months ago, one of my friends called me up and told me we were going to see a play. I was baffled because he did not usually care for live plays. He had just seen Songs for a New World the day before and already bought us both tickets. When he raved about the voices and performances in the show I was sure he was embellishing. After the show, I knew that words could never describe fully what I had just witnessed. We immediately downloaded the official soundtrack for the off-Broadway production and it doesn't even come near to being as great as Breakthrough's performance.
This past Monday, we decided to go see Rent at Breakthrough Theater. We would have gone earlier but EVERY SINGLE SHOW was sold out. After seeing bits and pieces of the movie version of Rent, I doubted how Breakthrough could convey all the movements and scenes in a black box theater. Once again, I was wrong to even question it. Their rendition was absolutely perfect. There was not a dry eye in the theater... especially mine because I had no idea how the play ended. It was great recognizing some of the same talent I had seen in the last play and also having the privilege to witness new talent. I could not stop thinking about how much I wanted to see the show again! Luckily another show opened for Sunday and I already have my ticket.
Unfortunately, it is too late to catch Rent. However... I must insist that you see any show there that you can. The talent that exists in this theater could easily rival any play in New York. They are constantly performing new plays and they even have Sunday Cabarets. Support your local artists and make sure you seize this golden opportunity right in our back yard. If you're not a fan of the theater, I guarantee they will change that.
